In September 2004, a handful of artists and craft makers were invited to attend a meeting at Rhyl Town Hall. Caroline Brady, Business Support Officer for Regeneration was hoping that we would form a consortium in partnership with the Athy group of artists in Ireland. It was called the Rhyl/Athy regeneration project. The purpose was to promote arts and crafts in Rhyl, gather together all the talent in the area and to raise the profile of Rhyl on the North Wales Coast. By June 2005, we had formed our Consortium and elected our Chairman and officers. We had our Grand Launch during Rhyl Week and put on a wonderful display of all our members' work. The Launch was attended by Chris Ruane MP, Ann Jones AM and many members of the Town Council. It was a roaring success and set the stage for regular Shows and Exhibitions during the following years.
It was specified that all work must be hand made by our members and of the highest quality. Although we have always encouraged the sale of artists' work and helped in this process this was not the main priority. The main priority was and still is; the promotion of the arts as part of the regeneration of Rhyl and a showcase for all the talent in this area.
Our consortium (Association) has been funded by Npower renewables and Rhyl Town Council. Commission on sales in our shows and membership fees has helped maintain our accounts year on year. Two years ago we were offered premises in the RYAG Building, on Wellington Road. We set ourselves up as a Community Enterprise Ltd Company by Guarantee with three directors and a treasurer. Our grants administrator applied for grants to pay for staff, rent and materials to set up the gallery. By June 2009 it was obvious that the premises in Wellington Road had become, both unsuitable and so delayed, that we were in danger of losing the grants we had acquired.
We viewed the premises in Kinmel Street and got the keys within a fortnight. All our grant money was kept after some negotiation. We opened GALLERY36 on 14th July 2009.
ETHOS I would like to point out that all work undertaken by officers and directors, associated with Rhylcreate is unpaid. Every thing that has been achieved has been on a voluntary basis. This has taken, hours, weeks and years of dedication, sacrifice and sheer hard work by some of our directors and officers including the website design, maintenance and redevelopment.
The ethos of Rhylcreate is clear. We wish to support genuine artists and craft makers in providing an opportunity to sell their work in our gallery. The love and dedication they have invested in their varying art works over the years, with hardly any personal gain must now be rewarded.
GALLERY 36 is a flagship enterprise for the arts and regeneration of Rhyl and a testimony to all the members who have given so much to their art and the consortium, for so many years.
NEW APPLICANTS
Since, we opened GALLERY 36, we have been flooded with enquiries about membership. There have been so many that we feel it necessary to tell new applicants that at this stage they must be members for three months before their work can be considered for display unless formally invited by the directors. They will be allowed to put their ads on the notice board and leave business cards and will be expected to attend meetings, unless absence is for specific reasons. We need proof of commitment to the ethos of RHYLCREATE. All work must be genuine and not copied from pictures or photographs by another artist. Any work which is not genuine will be rejected.
All work must be hand made or genuinely produced design. Work is always accepted if, INSPIRED by (for example), Monet, Clarice Cliff, McIntosh.
Gallery 36 must not be used solely for the retail of their art works, commitment to the consortium and other members takes president.
The directors have the power, with the agreement of a majority of members to terminate membership in any case of misconduct, bad language, dishonesty or any behaviour detrimental to the consortium.
Rhylcreate has worked hard to become a highly respected force for the arts in Rhyl. As a member of Rhylcreate you join a band of highly motivated, highly talented and highly committed artists and craft makers, their work and its development and quality, being the bedrock of our success, although we are always looking for budding artists from every age group, with a genuine interest in their discipline.
If you feel you will be happy as a member of our group, then you may apply for membership!
You can join Rhylcreate by filling out our membership form (.doc), (.pdf) and sending it to Lynda Waggett, our Chairman.
